The Veil Was Never Closed , Part 1: Your Ancestors Don't Keep a Calendar

Every October, it starts.

The veil is thinning. You see it on every feed. Candles, black lace, a carefully placed skull.

And I get it. I love this season. The dark coming early. The smell of wet leaves. The way the light goes gold and then just… goes.

But I want to say something.

The veil is not thinner in October. It was never thick.

Your ancestors do not keep a calendar. They don't wait for the last week of the month to lean in close. They were there when you burned the toast this morning. They were there in the parking lot, in the shower, in the 3 a.m. wake-up you couldn't explain.

What changes at Samhain is not the veil. It's us.

What Samhain actually opens

This time of year asks us to slow down. The land is pulling everything inward. The garden is done. The leaves are letting go. And when we slow down, we finally notice what has been there all along.

That's the medicine of the season. Not a portal that swings open for a few weeks. A remembering.

The dead have always been close. Samhain just gives us a deep invitation/reminder to look.

The trouble with seasonal spirituality

Here's where I get a little fierce.

When we treat ancestor connection as a seasonal aesthetic, we keep it at arm's length. We visit. We take the photo. We pack it away with the decorations in November.

And then we wonder why it feels hollow.

Real relationship doesn't work like that. Not with the living. Not with the dead. You don't call your grandmother once a year and expect to know her.

Honestly, I talk to my ancestors everyday. Specifically my grandparents on my fathers side. I spent a lot of time with them during my youth. They show up in the everyday simple moments. Everytime I see an eagle or hawk, my grandfather waves at me. When the little old ladies at the grocery store chat with me in the aisle my grandmother sends a hug.

Living with a thin veil, every day

So what does it look like to live like the veil is always thin?

It looks small. It looks like:

  • Saying good morning to the ones who came before you.

  • Setting out an extra cup now and then, for no reason but love.

  • Noticing the song that comes on, the bird that lands, the smell of a kitchen you haven't stood in for thirty years.

  • Asking for help. Out loud. And then actually listening.

None of it needs candles. All of it is welcome to have them.

This Samhain, try this

Instead of reaching across the veil this year, try resting in it. Sit somewhere quiet. Feel your feet. Feel the long line of people standing behind you, all the way back.

They're not on the other side of anything.

They're here.

I wanted to create a series for this conversation…

Next in the series: the thread that runs both ways, and what it means to be woven into a lineage.

The veil is always thin. But Samhain is a night the whole land seems to agree on, and I’ve made something for it.

A Samhain Prayer Ritual: Honouring the Roots, Releasing the Leaves is a guided practice in two movements: turning toward the ones who came before, then giving back what’s ready to fall. It includes three prayers to choose from or weave together, a simple release ritual, and journal prompts for afterward.

You can bring it home as a single offering, or find it inside Mystic Marrow, alongside seasonal rituals, readings, and essays all year long.

trust yourself, Natalie
